LFI launches new melamine detection and testing service

Food research company Leatherhead Food International (LFI) has launched a new service to detect and test for melamine in food and drink products.
Currently, two sample matrices have been validated for chocolate and powdered baby food; and LFI is continuing to verify the procedure against further matrices.
The new service is targeted towards a variety of companies in the food and drink industry, including food and ingredients manufacturers, food companies and food importers.
It is also an example of the company's on-going determination to maintain LFI as a leader in flexible and responsive analytical services in the food industry.
Melanie is a chemical that is widely used in the plastics industry. It has sometimes been illegally added to food products to make them appear to have a higher protein content, and has linked to kidney failure.
The European Union has recently banned all imports on Chinese milk-related products targeted at children, including biscuits, milk-candy and chocolate. In addition, The European Commission has asked EU Member States to carry out checks on all products imported from China that contain over 15% milk.
