Call for industry to fight against hunger

Humanitarian charity, Action Against Hunger is calling on the country’s chefs and restaurateurs to unite in the fight against hunger for the tenth anniversary of its Restaurants Against Hunger Campaign.

The international campaign, Restaurants Against Hunger raises essential funds to help those most in need to feed themselves.

Working throughout the year, the campaign's focus of activity is 'Fight hunger. Eat out' month in October to coincide with UN World Food Day on the 16th of the month.

Last year saw the UK restaurant industry raise over £300,000 for the campaign, with all funds going directly to support the vital work of Action Against Hunger.

This year, more than 500 restaurants are expected to sign up, helping the charity to reach their target of £450,000 and make this year's 'Fight hunger. Eat out' month the biggest ever.

Rick Stein puts the case simply: "I believe it is important to take positive action. Together we can work towards a hunger free world; a world where everybody can have enough food to eat and access to safe drinking water; a world where no child goes to sleep hungry."

Joining Rick Stein are the likes of Tom Aikens, Michel Roux Jr, Raymond Blanc, Giorgio Locatelli, Rick Stein and Antonio Carluccio.

Getting involved is free and whether your operation is a restaurant, café or gastropub, you can do your bit in a way that suits your business.

Suggestions include:
  • Giving a percentage of sales from a specific dish to the charity
  • Asking guests to make an optional donation when paying the bill
  • Hosting a special event or themed evening
